A Beach Becomes a Mythological Battlefield for Offshore Extraction

As part of the Ionian Lab residency program on Othoni, the westernmost inhabited island of Greece, visual artist The Krank has completed a 500m2 temporary land art installation on Aspri Ammos beach, facing Block 2 in the northern Ionian Sea, where offshore hydrocarbon extraction projects are planned.

Titled The Hunt, the large-scale installation is located approximately 10 kilometres from the proposed extraction area and becomes part of the very landscape that is facing an imminent transformation. The work brings together two moments in time, separated by thousands of years. The prehistoric hunter and the contemporary extraction industry appear as different manifestations of the same human impulse: the desire to search, conquer, and extract resources from the environment.

Humanity is portrayed not only as the hunter, but also as the opponent of a new hunter it has created itself. The machine no longer functions merely as a tool, but as a force that reshapes the environment and threatens the conditions of human existence. The figures emerge as archaeological traces, appearing as the last witnesses of a landscape on the verge of becoming an industrial zone. They seem trapped within a mythological moment of conflict between human instinct and technological power.

“On the final day of the installation, visitors approached me with concern, asking what the black material spread across the beach was and whether it could harm the environment. They were surprised by the presence of a foreign element within a landscape that was so familiar to them. Perhaps this is where a second reading of the work emerges, not only through the image itself, but through the question of permanence.

 

When I began explaining the idea behind the work, we walked together towards the rocks, from where we looked back at the installation and the horizon, the very place where the extraction projects are expected to begin in the following months. The hunters and the platform gradually acquired a reason for their existence, and the artwork became a common space for conversation. I reassured them that the work was temporary and that would be removed. In responding to their instinctive reaction, the moment they realised that something appeared not to belong there, I noticed their gaze slowly shifting away from the artwork and towards the horizon. For a few moments, I felt that we were looking at the same landscape through the same lens.”

Μια παραλία γίνεται πεδίο μυθολογικής σύγκρουσης για τις εξορύξεις στο Ιόνιο

Με αφορμή το πρόγραμμα residency Ionian Lab στο νησί των Οθωνών, το δυτικότερο κατοικημένο σημείο της Ελλάδας, ο εικαστικός καλλιτέχνης The Krank ολοκλήρωσε ένα εφήμερο έργο land art έκτασης 500 τετραγωνικών μέτρων στην παραλία άσπρη άμμος που βλέπει προς το Block 2 στο βόρειο Ιόνιο, όπου σχεδιάζονται υπεράκτιες εξορύξεις υδρογονανθράκων.

"Το κυνήγι", η μεγάλης κλίμακας εγκατάσταση βρίσκεται περίπου 10 χιλιόμετρα από την περιοχή των εξορύξεων και εντάσσεται στο ίδιο το τοπίο που βρίσκεται αντιμέτωπο με έναν επικείμενο μετασχηματισμό. Το έργο φέρνει σε επαφή δύο χρονικές στιγμές που χωρίζονται από χιλιάδες χρόνια. Ο προϊστορικός κυνηγός και η σύγχρονη βιομηχανία εξόρυξης παρουσιάζονται ως διαφορετικές εκφράσεις της ίδιας ανθρώπινης επιθυμίας.. της αναζήτησης, της κατάκτησης και της άντλησης πόρων από το περιβάλλον.

Ο άνθρωπος δεν υπάρχει μόνο ως κυνηγός, αλλά και ως αντίπαλος ενός νέου κυνηγού που δημιούργησε ο ίδιος. Η μηχανή δεν λειτουργεί πλέον ως εργαλείο, αλλά ως παράγοντας που αναδιαμορφώνει το περιβάλλον και απειλεί την ίδια την ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη. Οι φιγούρες εμφανίζονται σαν αρχαιολογικά ίχνη και μοιάζουν να είναι οι τελευταίοι μάρτυρες ενός τοπίου που μετατρέπεται σε βιομηχανική ζώνη, σαν να παγιδεύονται σε μια μυθολογική στιγμή σύγκρουσης.

"Την τελευταία μέρα της εγκατάστασης οι λουόμενοι με ρωτούσαν με ανησυχία τι είναι αυτό το μαύρο υλικό πάνω στην παραλία και αν θα προκαλέσει ζημιά στο περιβάλλον. Τους ξάφνιασε τόσο η παρουσία ενός ξένου στοιχείου μέσα σε ένα γνώριμο τοπίο για αυτούς. Ίσως εκεί να βρίσκεται και μια δεύτερη ανάγνωση του έργου, όχι μόνο στην έννοια της εικόνας, αλλά της μονιμότητας. 

​

Όταν άρχιζα να τους μιλάω για την ιδέα, πηγαίναμε μαζί προς τα βράχια, από όπου ξανακοιτούσαμε το έργο και τον ορίζοντα.. εκεί όπου πρόκειται να ξεκινήσουν οι εξορύξεις σε λίγους μήνες. Οι κυνηγοί και η πλατφόρμα αποκτούσαν σιγά σιγά λόγο ύπαρξης και το έργο γινόταν ένας κοινός τόπος συζήτησης. Τους διαβεβαίωσα πως το έργο θα μείνει προσωρινά και θα απομακρυνθεί.

 

Απαντώντας στην ενστικτώδη αντίδραση τους, όταν αντιλήφθηκανότι κάτι μοιάζει να μην ανήκει εδώ, παρατηρούσα πως το βλέμμα τους σταματούσε να κοιτάει προς το έργο και στρεφόταν προς τον ορίζοντα... 

 

Για λίγα λεπτά ένιωθα ότι κοιτούσαμε το ίδιο τοπίο μέσα από το ίδιο πρίσμα."
